I have made money with affiliate programs, but not with sites like Google or Yahoo. I also pay affiliate fees on my website for Real estate.
There is, however, a company where you can earn residual income without having to sell anything. It is a global e-commerce business with no website for you to manage or service. The company is called Dubli and they are launching their North American division October 4, 2008.

I made some cash from my Amazon affiliate program. Limit your affiliates and concentrate on getting good affiliates that coincide with your web site. For example, make believe your site is going to be about crocheting. Maybe an affiliate to Amazon where you highlight different books about crocheting and an affiliate program with a store that sells crocheting stuff.
Target your audience and try to keep your front page as clean as possible by limiting the banner ads. Putting a whole bunch of affiliate links on a secondary page will probably be useless as folks won’t surf to a page of links just to go somewhere to buy something random.
